What the IRS says
For US tax purposes, digital assets are property, not currency, and income from digital assets is taxable. You must report digital asset transactions whether or not they result in a gain or loss (IRS: digital assets).
Usually taxable (US example)
- Selling a memecoin for dollars.
- Swapping one coin for another, including memecoin → SOL or USDC.
- Paying for goods or services with crypto (including a crypto card).
- Receiving tokens as payment, a reward or an award, such as referral payouts or callout rewards.
Usually not a transaction (US example)
- Buying crypto with dollars and holding it.
- Moving coins between your own wallets, unless you pay the fee in crypto.
Records to keep
- Date, amount and dollar value of each buy, sale and swap.
- Fees paid.
- Rewards received and their value on the day.
- Wallet addresses you own; explorers can rebuild history from them.
Watch out for scams
The IRS warns about letters with QR codes asking you to register crypto on a 'compliance portal': it doesn't require registration of digital assets.

Is swapping a memecoin for SOL taxable?
In the US, yes: exchanging one digital asset for another is a disposal.
Are moves between my own wallets taxable?
In the US, transferring between wallets you own isn't a transaction, unless you pay the transfer fee with crypto.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is a summary of public guidance; rules depend on where you live.
Signed up but waiting on first deposit?
Nothing is paid until your first purchase through the Deposit button in the pump.fun app (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or another method the app shows). SOL or other crypto sent from an exchange or wallet does not count. The 10-day window starts when that deposit is confirmed: trade on 5 different days (UTC) inside it, and keep the purchased funds in the wallet until the last payout.
